New Deal Programs Work Shirt (LOT 3053)
The minimalist design, is reminiscent of World War I, and the painstakingly sewn process makes it hard to believe the original garment was made in the late 1930s. The high collar stands is unusual for workwear clothing
In the sewing room, called the “SEWING ROOM,” the seamstresses took great pride in their work with the initials “W.P.A. “ standing for “We Patch Anything.” The ladies repaired old clothes and made new clothes to be worn by people in need and for fellow “WPA” workers along with for themselves. As for the sewing specifications, there is no “backstitching,” which was already mainstream in workwear sewing at the time. This is because the sewing factory environment was not large–scale, and the process was carried out using only “lock stitching” rather than “industrial sewing machines”.
